Not exactly the art style one might expect to find in south Mississippi, this is the monument above Sam Dale's grave. Dale was an early explorer of the Mississippi Territory, settler, and legislator. His grave is at Sam Dale State Park. The park is a 2-acre, day-use area, built around a memorial to General Sam Dale as a 19th century frontiersman and patriot. The focal point is this statue of Dale by the late Harry D. Reeks of Ocean Springs. It is located 15 miles north of Meridian off Mississippi 39 at Daleville. One of many architectural curiosities in the area.
Tombigbee State Park is located just east of Tupelo. It features fishing, rental cabins, and a nice picnic area.
The Choctaw Indian Fair runs for an entire week in July. The central part of the reservation near Philadelphia essentially becomes the fairgrounds.
