Traditional Choctaw Silver Round Combs
Our round combs for the dancers of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians
debuted on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the traditional womens' dance, on the
last day of the Choctaw Indian Fair. This is a close-up shot showing a dancer
wearing our diamondback round comb. The comb is properly worn at the back of the
head, all teeth fully engaged in the hair. Our combs differ from the original
models in that they have wavy teeth to lock into the hair during
dances. | These
dancers
show the different appearance of silverwork (the women's combs) and the the
later style beadwork of the men's hatbands. |
We made all the combs seen on the
female dancers here at Brigid's Forge. Despite age differences, all the combs
are the same dimensions. The head does not grow that very much from late
childhood to adulthood, and our combs are flexible enough to accomodate the
difference. We hope the little girls here have these combs to treasure all their
lives and then pass on to future generations.

The silver Choctaw women's comb, or "issep isht elpi" is part of the traditional
dance regalia. It is typically worn just behind the crown of the head. Our comb,
made to specifications originally for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians,
features stickball (the kebutsha game), diamondback (from the rattlesnake), and
other patterns in repousse for added strength. Other patterns and matching men's
hatbands are available and new ones are being developed. For the purposes of
Native American powwow dancing, where regalia is not allowed to fall off, we
have made the teeth wavy so it will "lock" into the hair. The comb measures
about 2 inches tall, one inch being the decorative back, the other the teeth, by
eleven inches long. These combs are made primarily for dance purposes but would
be equally suited for Indian bridal wear; consider it as a replacement for the
wedding tiara worn by the bride along with a matching silver hatband for the
groom. If you need matching silver earrings, bracelets, necklaces, or finger
rings, please do not hesitate to contact us; custom designs are our specialty
and are invited.
